South Hook

If you follow the coast, west out of Milford Haven, South Hook is the first sandy beach you will come to.

Not that you’d want to spend much time there as it is also the site of the largest LNG regasification terminal in Europe.

I love places like this, there is an aviation fuel refinery and docks along the coast near Southampton that is interesting. I took some photos but had the wrong lens so a bit far away. I’ll pop them up this week so you can have a look.

I always like the strange contrast between nature and industry, particularly on coastlines.

I always seem to home in on the melancholy.

It’s only a tiny stretch on sand anyway but it’s wierd to suddenly come across this hulkig great spar jutting out into the sea, festooned with barbed wire and security cameras. There’s not much to be seen on the site itself except the giant cooling tanks.

The whole scene looks like a set from Dr Who.

You can also get quite close the Dragon LNG/Semlogistics fuel storage site over in Waterston. In that case the footpath goes over the pipes rather than under them and it feels like you’re in a Cold War thriller as you navigate the very Soviet-feeling bridges.
